Volvo Trucks Shifts Focus on I-Shift Gearbox Technology

Volvo is a renowned heavy duty truck maker in the world that invented several advanced technologies in the automobile segment. Volvo Truck's I-Shift automated manual gearbox is one of its greatest inventions in the heavy duty truck industry. This 12-speed AMT gearbox is known to improve overall fuel economy, ride efficiency and comfort. Swedish-based truck maker has recently upgraded this sophisticated gearbox system by adding crawler gears to improve starting capacity. The company foresees greater prospect I-Shift technology in the near future. Volvo Trucks India has said that the I-Shift technology is gaining good response from its mining customers from across the country.
This sophisticated gearbox system comes with a option of choosing between fully automatic gear-chaning and manual gear selection. Trucks with the I-Shift gearbox won't feature a clutch pedal, which further eases the burden on driver. The gearchanging software integrated to the I-Shift gearbox senses the need for shifting of gears for optimum performance on uneven roads and terrains. Besides, it costs low maintainence cost, thanks to the long oil-change intervals.
Volvo's FMX 440 8x4 is the first truck to be sold in India with an I-Shift automated manual transmission. Since its launch, Volvo has sold as many as 400 units trucks in the country in a span of 12 months. Trucks with this gearbox setup are highly popular in the European markets.
“The company is considering introduction of I-Shift technology in other model trucks in India,” said Mr. Pierre Jean Verge Solamon, president, Volvo India.
Volvo India is currently offering heavy duty trucks in three different ranges: FH, FM and FMX. Among these, Volvo FH is the company's flagship model and is built for on-road operations. The next-in-line, FM series truck is a flexible all-rounder vehicle that can be used for multiple applications. For Volvo, FMX series truck is the largest selling vehicle in India. It is a power and most efficient truck, whcih is capable of delivering extreme performance is harsh conditions.
