HIGHLIGHTS

July 4, 2019: Tata Yodha with Bollywood action hero Akshay Kumar as its brand ambassador is a worthy product aligned for action in the pickup segment. For starters, it can be understood as the utilitarian cousin of the more upmarket lifestyle pick up, the Tata Xenon. Being designed for more duty than style, the Tata Yodha gets a single cab design against the Xenon’s double cab thereby generating a much larger luggage/goods carrying space.

This means that the Gross Vehicle Weight is a tad bit different at 3350kg while its payload capacity is a commendable 1140kg to 1500Kg making it a strong offering in the sub-1.5 Ton pick-up segment. Being based on the Tata Xenon Pick-up means that the Tata Yodha gets the same front disc and rear drum setup while the suspension at the front is a heavy duty six-leaf semi elliptical spring setup. The rear suspension is taken care by Tata’s innovative take on semi-elliptical type setup.

At the heart of the action packed vehicle is the Tata Motor’s trusted and well received 3.0-liter four-cylinder diesel unit that develops 85bhp at 3000rpm and a peak torque of 250Nm at 1000-2000rpm. The power is transmitted via a 5-Speed manual gearbox.

Overview

Built tall like a SUV while still incorporating the traditional pickup attributes, Tata Yodha comes with well-designed interiors and rugged aesthetics. Sharing a majority of its components with the Xenon, Tata Yodha features the same design language and shares a majority of interior components with the Xenon pickup. Even though this commercial pickup had undergone Tata’s stripped-down treatment, Tata Yodha still manages to offer impressive comfort and features for a very competitive price in this particular segment. Tata claims that Yodha pickup is the perfect combination of style, safety, comfort and ruggedness and offers benchmark-worthy high levels of performance and low operating costs. Chief amongst its rivals Tata Xenon Yodha competes with Mahindra’s Maha Bolero 1.7 T pickup truck.

Specs

Interiors of Tata Yodha are quite standard as expected and comes with a single tone dashboard that features silver accents. Yodha gets manual door locks and roll down windows which is pretty standard in offerings of this segment. Surprisingly the position of handbrake has been moved on to the right side of the driver seat. The headlamp adjuster switch is located on to the right side of the steering wheel and the quality of plastics used across the cabin is reasonably impressive. The instrument cluster comprises two analog gauges which include a speedometer and RPM meter/ temperature gauge. Between the two dials, we find a digital odometer located at the bottom of the cluster.

The middle console is also stripped down and does not get air conditioning or even a media system as standard however there are slots available for aftermarket add-ons. The only feature offered as standard in the center console is a 12-volt charging socket and a lockable compartment. The top speed of Tata Yodha is limited to 80 kmph and the commercial pickup truck comes with an impressive engine oil change interval of 20,000 kms.

Engine & Performance

Tata Yodha is the company’s latest commercial pickup truck which is powered by Tata’s 3 litre 4-cylinder BS4 engine that produces 85 BHP of power at 3000 RPM and 250 NM of torque between 1000 and 2000 RPM. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed synchromesh gearbox and gets power steering as standard. Tata Yodha is available in 5 variants which include the standard Yodha, Yodha Eco, Yodha 1500, Yodha 4x4 and Yodha Cabin Crew models. The prices for the all-new Tata Xenon Yodha pickup with BS-IV compliant engine start at Rs. 6.19 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi)

Tata’s commercial pickup truck is capable of towing 1250 kgs of payload and rides on two-stage semi-elliptical leaf springs which comprises of 9 leaves each. Tata Yodha offers 210 mm of ground clearance and a 6250 mm turning circle radius. The total kerb weight of Yodha stands at 1850 kgs whereas the gross vehicle weight of the pickup stands at 3100 kgs.

Handling & Suspension

The ride and handling of Tata Yodha is quite comfortable for an offering in this segment and one that can take on any terrain or payload size (within recommended limits), thanks to improved stability bestowed by antiroll bars and 16-inch radial tires.

Braking & Safety

Tata Yodha comes with a front anti-roll bar as standard across all models and braking duty at the front is carried out by hydraulic twin-pod disc brakes and at the rear, we find dual drum brakes set up. The pickup rides on 16-inch rims wrapped in 215/75 Radial tyres. At the front, we find standard headlamp clusters and even though there are slots provided for fog lamps, Tata does not offer fog lights in the Yodha pickup truck even as optional extras. On the sides, we find indicator inserts which sit on top of the wheel arches and underneath the company’s 3.8-liter DiCOR logo.
