Daimler To Integrate Safety Features In Trucks Ahead Of Stipulated Indian Regulations

Modified On Jul 24, 2023 06:32 PMBy Dheeraj Nair

BharatBenz, a brand of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), in line with the global vision of the Daimler Group, has announced that the company aims to have at least one safety feature integrated into trucks ahead of stipulated Indian regulations, every alternate year by 2030.

Satyakam Arya, MD of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles reportedly told Autocar Professional that the company would continue to offer products one step ahead of new regulations in order to improve the safety of drivers and passengers.

Safety Plans Of DICV:

According to DICV, the company is focused on integrating 70 percent of its trucks globally with a minimum of one safety feature ahead of the governmental bodies stipulating and implementing regulations, every alternate year.

Arya has mentioned that DICV was always at the forefront of integrating safety features in India right from including robust bumpers to designing windscreens for driver and pedestrian safety. The company now manufactures trucks with safety features that adhere to the ECE R29-03 safety standards as well.

ECE R29-03 is basically European vehicle cabin construction-based safety norms which are deemed some of the strictest standards in the world. Arya also believes that ECE R29-03 regulations should soon be mandated by the Indian government as a standard safety rule in India.

Further, Arya points out that safer truck cabins must be manufactured since the crash-related data shows that at least 21 percent of fatalities take place because the driver’s body cannot be taken out of the truck cabin quickly to get them to the nearest hospital. Hence, it is said that well-engineered truck cabins are a necessity.

How Do Safety Features Help DICV?

While DICV is focused on improving road safety by integrating ECE R29-03 standards, the company also pointed out that it could also open up export opportunities, especially in the European commercial vehicle market, which could help the company grow further.

Nonetheless, what matters is the fact that truck makers such as BharatBenz (DICV) are offering rigid and safe trucks in India which are top-notch in terms of performance. Some of their trucks that come with safer cabins and powerful engines include the BharatBenz 4828R and 3523R haulage trucks, 5528T 6x4 tractor-trailer, and 3528C tipper truck, among others.
