Published On Jun 27, 2024 05:20 PMBy Ketan Birla

The Bureau of Indian Standards has launched 2 new norms to enhance the safety of electric vehicles. With these new standards, BIS now has 30 Indian standards in total for EVs and related accessories.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released two new standards – IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024 – to improve electric vehicles' safety and quality in the L, M, and N vehicle categories. With the addition of these new standards, BIS now has 30 standards that are unique to electric vehicles (EVs) and their accessories, such as charging systems.

Designed to ensure a safe electric powertrain, the newly launched standards of BIS satisfy strict safety regulations. They also stress the importance of batteries' performance and safety, making sure they are powerful and secure. The Indian standard IS 18606: 2024 is for the M and N EV categories while IS 18590: 2024 is for the L category.

Official Statement By BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards)

On June 22, 2024, BIS added in a statement, “However, the shift to electric mobility extends beyond cars and trucks. E-rickshaws and e-karts are gaining popularity across India. To address this, BIS has introduced IS 18294: 2023, which establishes safety standards specifically for these vehicles. These standards cover various aspects, from construction to functionality, ensuring the safety of both drivers and passengers.”
