Bosch India Successfully Tests Hydrogen-Fuelled Truck In India: Is Hydrogen Truck Future Of Mobility?

Modified On Aug 05, 2023 01:02 PMBy Dheeraj Nair

Bosch India plans to showcase its BS6 complaint hydrogen truck in early 2024. Could such hydrogen trucks be the future of the Indian commercial vehicle industry? Here is your answer:

Bosch, a company with comprehensive expertise in vehicle technology, has announced that it has successfully tested a hydrogen-fueled truck at its campus in Bengaluru, India. The company aims to showcase its BS6 phase II hydrogen-powered truck in early 2024. This comes in after the launch of its pilot hydrogen engine testing facility in Bengaluru last year.

Guruprasad Mudlapur, Managing Director of Bosch and President of Bosch Group in India, also mentions that the company leans towards a climate-neutral future and that cleaner fuels, green hydrogen and electrification take centre stage in their commitment to a climate-neutral future.

Further, the testing of the hydrogen-fuelled truck at its campus in Bengaluru comes at a time when Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have stepped forward and plan on integrating hydrogen-fuel-powered vehicles into their product portfolio in the near future.

Bosch’s Hydrogen Tech:

Bosch has invested a significant amount of time and effort towards the development of components for electrolyzers, which basically splits hydrogen and oxygen from water to help generate energy. Bosch estimates that the global market for their electrolyzer components will be around 14 billion euros by 2030.

Regarding the electrolyzers which are for producing low-emission hydrogen, Guruprasad Mudlapur said, “The electrolyzers are under development and we have not offered our electrolyzers to anyone yet. We are in an advanced stage of development and will be offering them to customers soon.”

Hydrogen Powered Commercial Vehicles:

Recently, Ashok Leyland showcased India’s first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) powered heavy-duty truck in India. The truck was powered by a hydrogen engine, which maintains an overall architecture similar to a conventional diesel powertrain.

With a loading capacity of 19-35 tons and a 400km range with one full tank of hydrogen, the Ashok Leyland hydrogen truck seems a promising step towards clean mobility. Other than Ashok Leyland, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) also showcased its first BharatBenz hydrogen-powered bus recently, developed in collaboration with Reliance.

Future Of Hydrogen Trucks In India:

Hydrogen trucks and associated technologies have a promising future in India since they lean towards clean mobility. Companies like Bosch and Ashok Leyland are actively exploring the potential of hydrogen-fueled trucks and it could potentially be the future of the Indian commercial vehicle industry.

While technologies linked to hydrogen are fast evolving and infrastructure is taking shape to facilitate greener mobility solutions which can have a positive impact on the environment, the possibility of hydrogen trucks being the future of mobility cannot be discarded.
