Like the rest of the year, truck sales remain buoyant in the month as demand for light, medium and heavy trucks stays strong.
The top truck brands published their monthly wholesale numbers (vehicles shipped to their dealers) of overall commercial vehicle sales for September ’2022. All the top brands maintain the momentum of positive sales across segments.
The September '22 numbers are encouraging for the industry which is now making a comeback from the pandemic, and demand is likely to stay higher. As industries are now operating at full scale, the medium and heavy trucks are finding more demand from fleet customers. Similarly, the opening of schools, colleges, and offices means more demand for buses which is clearly visible too. Truck sales across the board remain strong as last-mile, light, medium and heavy-duty segments clocked good numbers in the month.

Let's look at the number of top truck brands in the month.
The market leader Tata Motors' maintains steady growth in the overall domestic commercial vehicle sales, which is up by 9% to 32979,313 units. (September 2021: 30,258 units). The M&HCV recorded a 16% jump to 9,983 units. (September 2021: 8,609 units). The Intermediate and light commercial vehicle segment slipped by 8% to 5,144 units, the cargo small commercial vehicles and pickups are the largest category in the company’s overall CV sales, increasing by 4% to 15,565. The commercial passenger carrier remained buoyant with a 111% jump to 2,287 units.
Ashok Leyland, another top truck maker saw a huge pull for its trucks across segments, with a total domestic sales of 16,499 units, up by 88%. (September 2021: 8,787 units). The medium and heavy commercial vehicles grew by 131% to 10,475 units, the trucks were up by 122%, and buses by 351%, with total shipments to dealers of 9,628 units and 847 units, respectively. The light truck inclusive of Dost+, Bada Dost, and Partner increased by 41% to 6024 units. (September 2021: 4,258). The total domestic sales cumulative stands at 79,639 units against 41,866 units in the same period last year (+90%).
Mahindra & Mahindra's overall CV sales soared by 65% to 21,608 units in the month. (September 2021:13,095 units). This includes the light commercial vehicle segments of less than 2 tonnes 4,452 units (+192%), the 2-3.5-tonne GVW pickups are high in demand with a growth of 126% to 16, 413 units. The less than 3.5T, and the heavy commercial vehicles 801 units up by 17%. The auto-rickshaw sales in the month recorded a sale of 5,774 units, up by a massive 94%.
Eicher Trucks sales increased by 14.7% in the month to 5,992 units. (September 2021: 5,226 units). Volvo Trucks and Volvo Buses sold 113 units in September which is up by down 137% from the same month last year.
Maruti Suzuki, India’s top car maker which holds its only commercial vehicle the Super Carry posted a total sale of 2,505 units in the month against 3,304 units the same month last year.
