Modified On Jun 20, 2023 05:51 PMBy Dheeraj Nair

We compare two high-performance Light Commercial Vehicles, the Eicher Pro 2049 CNG and the Tata 407g SFC, to help you choose the right truck for challenging fleet operations.

The last-mile delivery business in India is growing rapidly and it has led to an increased demand for Light Commercial Vehicles to deliver goods with minimal downtime. As a result, brands like Eicher Motors and Tata Motors are thriving these days, thanks to their popularity with the last-mile logistics crowd.

However, many logistical managers are finding it a tough task to choose a truck from these two brands. If you’re one of such managers or fleet operators for last-mile delivery companies who’s looking to pick the right truck, here is a specs comparison between the Eicher Pro 2049 CNG and Tata 407g SFC.

Eicher Pro 2049 CNG Vs Tata 407g SFC: Powertrain

The Eicher Pro 2049 CNG truck comes with a 3.3-litre BS6-compliant CNG engine that produces 95hp at 3200rpm and 230Nm at around 1200-2000rpm. This high-performance engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

Meanwhile, the Tata 407g SFC comes with a 3.8-litre BS6-compliant CNG engine that produces 83hp at 2500rpm and 285Nm at around 1200-1600rpm. This high-torque engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Compared to the Eicher Pro 2049 CNG, the Tata 407g SFC produces higher torque at lower rpm. This means the Tata theoretically should have more pulling power and higher haulage capacity. However, the Eicher Pro 2049 CNG has more horsepower at higher rpm, which should result in faster acceleration.

Ideally, a commercial truck needs to have higher torque than more horsepower for better haulage performance. In this instance, the Tata 407g SFC has better torque than the Eicher Pro 2049 CNG.

Brake And Suspension Setup: Eicher vs Tata

The Eicher Pro 2049 CNG is equipped with a hydraulic braking system and disc brakes at all four ends for excellent stoppage ability. The front suspension consists of semi-elliptical leaves with shock absorbers while the rear houses semi-elliptical leaves.

On the other hand, the Tata 407g SFC is fitted with a hydraulic H2LS braking system for efficient braking performance and lower brake wear. Its front suspension consists of parabolic leaf springs and hydraulic double-acting telescopic type shock absorbers with anti-roll bar while the rear houses a semi-elliptical leaf spring and hydraulic double-acting telescopic type shock absorber.

Although both the trucks have hydraulic braking systems, the Eicher Pro 2049 differs here in that it has disc brakes at all ends. Ideally, disc brakes are considered to offer better stopping ability compared to drum brakes. However, drum brakes offer better durability and require less maintenance.

As for suspension, the Tata 407g SFC offers better ride comfort than the Eicher Pro 2049 CNG since it has parabolic leaf springs and telescopic shock absorbers. Parabolic leaf springs ideally offer a lighter unsprung weight, resulting in better ride comfort, not to mention it is also more flexible.

However, for better load-carrying capacity and durability, both the Eicher Pro 2049 CNG and Tata 407g SFC houses rigid semi-elliptical leaf springs at the rear section.

It even comes with a one-year or unlimited km warranty (on the vehicle) and a three-year unlimited km warranty on the engine and gearbox.

Furthermore, the Eicher Pro 2049 CNG comes with a higher payload capacity compared to the Tata 407g SFC. It has a 2286kg payload while the Tata 407g SFC offers 2100kg. In short, the Eicher Pro 2049 CNG is for those looking for a more premium appeal and the Tata 407g LPT is meant for those seeking an affordable truck for tough operations.
