Mar 16, 2020: The Tata SFC 709 EX is one of the most popular and longest-running trucks in the Indian market. Catering the sub 7 ton segment, the Tata SFC 407 Pickup EX offers a Gradeability of 27% along with a maximum payload rating of 4,275kg. For the added comfort of the rider and occupants, the loading span of 12.6 ft gets Semi-elliptical leaf springs with telescopic shock absorbers suspension functionality on both ends of the truck.
Offered with a vehicle configuration of either Cabin & Chassis or Cabin with load body options, the variants are Tata SFC 709 EX 3800/CAB, Tata SFC 709 EX 3800/HSDand the Tata SFC 709 EX 3800/CLB. Competing with the Tata SFC 709 EX, are Eicher Pro 1059 and the Eicher 10.75 E2 Plus.
The SFC 709 EX comes equipped with a four-cylinder BSIV compliant Tata 497 TCIC SPCR Turbo Intercooled 3.8-litre diesel motor engine. This 2956cc engine produces a maximum power output of 83hp besides generating a peak torque of up to 250Nm. Power delivery to the engine is handled by a five-speed manual transmission gearbox mated to a 280mm single plate dry-type clutch.

Engine and Performance
SFC 709 EX is powered by Tata 497 Turbocharged Intercooled 3783 cc 4 Cylinder engine which is good enough to produce a moderate power of 125 PS @ 2,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 400 Nm @ 1,300 - 1,500 rpm. These power figures are ideal for small entrepreneurs for their varying need of energy and load capacity.
Paired with GBS-40 Synchromesh 5-Speed gearbox, it could hit the top speed of 110 km/h and has a decent gradeability of 25%. This much performance quotient makes SFC 709 EX a competent vehicle to rely upon. Also, its BS-III emission norms and 160 Litre fuel tank capacity is ideal for short distance commuting. Making the overall gear and power transmission process smooth is Single Plate Dry Friction Type with 310 mm diameter.
Vehicle Built and Load Capacity
Available in only 3,800 mm wheelbase and body options of CAB, High Side Deck (HSD) and Drop Side Deck (DSD), SFC 709 EX has city-road compatible turning radius of 6,750 meter. The loading length HSD and DSD options is 12.6 feet with overall length of 3,833 mm and 3,844 mm respectively. The Ground Clearance for this truck common for all variant, i.e.; 194 mm.

Handling and Suspension
It’s a well-known fact that Indian roads are no where near to international standards and that has forced truck manufacturers to offer better handling. Complied to these needs, SFC 709 EX has Reciprocating Ball Type steering, which makes maneuvering easy on bumpy roads and ascents.
Ensuring jerk-free drive, there are Semi-Elliptical Leaf Springs & Hydraulic Double Acting Telescopic at front and the rear suspension along with Auxiliary Springs at rear. Its Heavy Duty Forged I Beam Reverse Elliot Type front axle and Single Reduction Hypoid Gears with Fully Floating Axle Shafts rear axle also does the duty to balance overall weight.
Braking and Safety
There always are high chances of mishaps on not-so-driver-friendly Indian roads and hence the need of effective braking is high. Keeping it in mind, SFC 709 EX is provided with Dual Circuit Full Air S-Cam service brakes, Spring Actuated Parking Brakes on rear wheels and Engine Exhaust brakes coupled with service brakes.
Body material used in making of SFC 709 EX is also tested and verified to its strength and with seat belts company makes sure that driver and co-passenger stay safe in any possible collision.
Design and Comfort
Being in light weight category, Tata hasn’t put much efforts in design part, but still managed to do a decent job with larger wind-shield and enough lighting.
Inside, there are features like digital clock, portable & clear lens lamp, shirt hook, mobile charger, utility box, reverse beeper and rear view mirror to make the journey a bit comfortable.
