Overview

The Mahindra Bolero is nothing less than a legendary name in the LCV segment in India. The vehicle is one of the vital contributors behind the company being the largest commercial truck manufacturer in the country. Mahindra & Mahindra presently holds a whopping 62% of the market share in the segment and sold 1.49 lakh units of the Bolero Pickup in the last fiscal year.

Mahindra & Mahindra has launched the latest iteration of the pickup in October 2018 in a bid to improve the overall sales. The updated version has a better seating, refreshed interior and a different body style. The cargo deck length comes in three different options too. The price of the pickup truck presently starts from around Rs. 6.5 lakhs.

Specs

  • Engine - mDI 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, Turbo Charged
  • Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) - 2,545 kg
  • Wheelbase - 2,750 mm
  • Power steering - Yes

Engine and Performance

The Mahindra Bolero Pickup is powered by the same engine that does the duties under the hood of the Bolero passenger car. The 2.5-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder engine is compliant with the BS-IV norms and can churn out a maximum power of 63 bhp at 6,300 rpm, and a peak torque of 195 Nm, that comes anywhere between 1,500 rpm and 1,800 rpm. The produced power is delivered to the wheels via a 5-speed manual unit with the help of a single plate dry clutch.

The pickup truck has an axle configuration of 4x4, which is an amazing addition in a vehicle of this unit.

Vehicle Built and Load Capacity

The Mahindra Bolero Pickup has a huge cargo carrying deck. Moreover, it even comes with a day cabin attached on the chassis. It is around 4.85 metres long and 1.67 metres wide. The wheelbase measures 3,014 mm, which is decently long to increase the cargo carrying bed. The ground clearance is at a decent 170 mm, which makes it suitable for city hauls.

The truck weight a total of 1,740 kilograms. However, the gross vehicle weight of 2,750 kilograms indicates a high payload carrying capacity of 1,010 kilograms. The flat bed is pretty long and allows the drivers to load a lot of goods.

Handling and Suspension

The Mahindra Bolero Pickup has a power steering for the drivers inside the cabin. This makes for an easier handling setup in the busy traffic conditions as well as on the long countryside roads. However, since the wheelbase is a little on the longer side, the turning radius is not less than 6.75 metres. The decent ground clearance helps on bumpy roads too.

As for the suspension for the 4x4 axle, both the front and rear has Rigid leaf spring suspensions. However, the front has anti-roll bars while the rear does not get it. The setup is pretty apt for taking the vehicle on any kind of roads.

Braking and Safety

Being placed above the entry-level pickup vans, the Mahindra Bolero Pickup has a better braking setup. There are disc brakes for all the wheels, which offer great stopping power, especially considering that the vehicle is more powerful than some of its competitors in the segment.

However, just like any vehicle in the price range or segment, the Bolero Pickup lacks the addition of ABS, even as an option. However, it still manages to do well without. Parking brakes are still offered as standard, unlike many other models that do not have it. Inside the cabin, there are seat belts for all the occupants on the D+1 cabin.

Design and Comfort

The Mahindra Bolero Pickup has a very conventional and likeable design and would please anyone with its styling. It looks sharp and has fewer edges everywhere around. The front section looks chiseled and muscular. The single cab has a D+1 setup.

As for the comfort for the people inside the cabin, the driver gets power steering (as mentioned earlier), which has a tiltable column and an adjustable driver’s seat. Air conditioning is not offered, even as an option. The addition of AC would have made things better for the occupants inside and some of the competitors have it already.
