SML Isuzu started way back in 1983 as the erstwhile Swaraj Vehicles with a joint venture and technical collaboration with Punjab Tractor, Mazda Motor Corporation, Japan & Sumitomo Corporation, Japan and renamed Swaraj Mazda in 1984. The commercial operation took off in 1986 with the introduction of the first locally developed bus in 1987. This was followed by a truck indigenously developed in 1990- the Swaraj Mazda Super. The company achieved the cumulative 50,000 units of vehicle sales in 2001; after the Suminto corporation raised its stake, it was renamed as SML Isuzu in 2011. Today, SML Isuzu has a modern truck and bus product portfolio catering to the market's small and medium-duty segment. Transitioning to the BS6 emission norms, the company has introduced modern trucks in the critical small to medium-duty segment in cargo, reefer, and tipper segment with various body and cowl configuration. The truck brands such as Samrat, Sartaj, Supreme, and Super have carved a niche for themself in the highly competitive ILCV market.
