Scania is a leading truck maker around the world. The company has established itself as a leading heavy duty brand, with a deeply entrenched market position in numerous countries. Apart from the vast footprint of its truck and bus business, the company is also recognized for its persistent clean energy investments. The brand has attempted to pioneer renewable energy devices in the auto-world through numerous means. One among them is the ethanol run buses, which have been released in numerous markets, including India.

The company had brought its ethanol bus project to the city of Nagpur recently, where the buses tested Indian waters. News has surfaced that the company had approached the municipality of Nagpur, asking for renewal of its project permit. Its current permit is set to expire on February 29 of this year, and the company has requested a six month extension.

The coming few months are crucial for the company's ethanol bus project: In the coming fiscal year, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation is likely to receive a fleet of 55 of Scania's ethanol buses from the central government, which would be included in the local transport supply. “If their plea comes before the expiry date, RTO could extend the permit. If it comes after February 29, the proposal would be tabled before the Regional Transport Authority meeting headed by its chairman and district collector Sachin Kurve.” said an official from the RTO of Nagpur.

The ethanol-bus project had been started about a year ago. Since then, Scania has approached local municipalities to obtain permits to take the bus to cities in other states. This includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, among others. The company had been forced to approach the Nagpur Municipality earlier on as well, seeking renewal of its expired permit. In the earlier instance, the RTO had registered the bus in the NMC and had issued a permit that stands upto May 20 2015. This was later stretched by the civic administration to November 2015. Now,

Currently, the company's green bus is employed in a route between RBI Square and Khapri right now. The green bus project was instated in August 2014 as a part of the company's initiative to pursue environmentally sustainable modes of transport for cities around the world.
