Truck Drivers Giving People Lifts may Lose Driving Licenses!

In a first, truck drivers operating in Haryana have been warned against transporting passengers in exchange of money or even free of charge. The Government of Haryana has cautioned the truck drivers on the same, and told them to be prepared for suspended driving licenses for at least three months, if in case they get caught in the act.
The transport department has termed truck drivers providing lifts as a ‘serious crime’. The department is also looking for cancelling registration and permit of such vehicles.
It is to be duly noted here that using goods vehicles to transport passengers is against the directions given by the Apex Court of India.
A notice issued by the transport department said, “They risk the lives of passengers.” The directions of not using trucks as passenger vehicles were issued by the court in 2009. ‘Passengers are not authorised to travel in commercial vehicles’ was the statement issued by the Supreme Court of India.
Truck drivers, providing lifts to people in exchange of money, is a common sight in many parts of the country. It is very easy to find travellers asking for lifts in exchange of money between Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida and Delhi. Many a times, people even opt for travelling via such vehicles in the middle of the night. Also, there are many religious institutions which use trucks to ferry followers to spiritual or religious events.
There might also be some short comings on the Governmental front, as it really gets tough to find transportation facilities to even well connected cities in India, for example, to Gurugram from Faridabad after 9 PM.. People in such scenarios, are left with no choice, but to rely on vehicles like trucks and pickups for completing their journeys.
P.S. Gurugram and Faridabad are two of the most important cities in Haryana. The cities are also connected to Delhi and Noida via each other.
