Tata Shortlists 17 Indian Drivers for Prima Truck Racing Championship

Published On Mar 04, 2016By Prashant Talreja

Two years ago, Tata Motors had the pride of launching the country's first truck racing championship. Known as the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship, it was a race between the company's award-winning Prima trucks, hosted in the Buddh International Circuit. Along with the event, the company had also introduced the T1 Racer Programme (TRP) which aimed to flesh out truck racers among Indians. For the third season of the event, officials recently announced the selection of 17 short-listed Indian truck drivers. The drivers need to clear one final round before the finalists are selected.

“Trucking is vitally important to the nation’s economy and the T1 Racer Program has been designed to help put a name and face to the men, who deliver essential commodities across the country every day,” commented Ravi Pisharody, executive director for the commercial vehicle unit of the company. “Since inception in 2014, with the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship, we have made a conscious decision to give Indian drivers an opportunity to be part of this event, and today we are in the process of selecting the final 12. We are proud to have collaborated with our customers for a shared vision in promoting the profession of truck driving,” he added.

Since the first season in 2014, the Prima Racing Championship had been dominated by foreign truck racers. Moving to change the trend, Tata had brought about the T1 Racer Program (TRP), aiming to train Indian truckers and promote their participation. The finalists of the TRP would play a major role in determining the 12 drivers who would be taking part in the final competition, to be held on March 20. A total of 550 drivers had applied for the T1 Racer Program, aiming to make it to the grand event. Tata had administered the long process that examined the drivers' skills and narrowed the number down to 17.

This season marks an upgrade, as Tata Motors just recently unveiled a new T1 2016 race truck for the event. The new vehicle received heavy modification in different areas, ensuring that it was best honed for racing.
