Mercedes-Benz Approves Alternative Fuels for Its Trucks
Published On Jul 09, 2016
World’s one of the leading commercial vehicle manufacturers Mercedes-Benz whose Indian subsidiary is BharatBenz has finally approved its trucks to use alternative fuel without changing the engine technology much. The Germany based auto maker approved these alternative fuels under prEN 15940 norm and made them applicable immediately. As of now, two latest generation trucks of the company namely OM 470 with 10.7 litre displacement and OM 471 with 12.8 litre displacement will be powered by these fuels.
The alternative fuel options include Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), Biomass to Liquid (BTL), Coal to Liquid (CTL) and Gas To Liquid (GTL). These fuels have gone a series of tests before getting cleared for the commercial usages and the engines have been designed as standard for them as well. However, the characteristics of these alternative fuels and diesel do not differ much and hence the injection process, fuel lines and engine seals remain same.
Talking about the engine, the motor performed same as it does while running on diesel and the torque data too remain unaffected. This performance conclusion are also according to the prEN 15940 norm guidelines. The engines would not be required to change the filters or oil frequently while using the alternative fuels.
