The popular cargo three-wheeler dislodges the Ape Xtra LDX in the last-mile cargo delivery segment with a 45 percent market share.

India’s last-mile cargo three-wheeler market is vibrant and thriving as demand for cargo/logistics deliveries in cities, towns and villages continue to drive the market. Top brands like BajajPiaggio and Mahindra cater to this price-sensitive, high volume segment with some of the key products. Buyers of these vehicles, mostly the first time vehicle owners, micro-entrepreneurs or small fleet-operators who want a vehicle that is affordable, lower on operating and maintenance cost and comes with a potential to help them earn superior profit.

In the overall three-wheeler market, the passenger carrier auto-rickshaw is the largest volume segment due to greater demand for affordable people mobility needs across India. However, the cargo carriers segment is equally vital in bridging the supply chain gap by reaching the absolute last mile quicker, faster and more economically.

This segment, largely dominated by the Piaggio Ape Xtra LDX three-wheeler, highly popular among fleet and individual buyers have overtaken Bajaj Auto’s cargo three-wheeler the Maxima C for the first time. In the April-Nov 2021 period, Maxima C captured over 45% market share in the overall cargo carrier segment to become the new leader in the category. The Maxima C launched nearly 6 years ago gained significant market share to claim the leadership position in the coveted segment.

The Maxima C is equipped with a refined BS6 engine promising segment-best reliability, higher power and superior fuel efficiency. Maxima C has gained traction in both urban and rural markets, thanks to these strong product attributes.

With the rapid shift in the market from the traditional diesel-powered vehicles to CNG, Bajaj successfully gained leadership for quite some time. Also, the lower operating costs of CNG made them even more compelling from operating and higher earning potential. Moreover, demand from sectors like e-commerce and last-mile transportation due to a revival of economic activities in rural India has lifted the demand for overall three-wheelers cargo vehicles.

Maxima C is available in two fuel variants – CNG and diesel. The CNG variant of Maxima C has a powerful engine that provides 7.30 kW power at 4750 rpm. The diesel variant is powered by a 470.5 cc engine that gives a power of 6.74 kW at 3400 rpm and a torque of 23.18 Nm at 2000 rpm. The higher payload capacity of the vehicle helps it to take heavy loads like LPG cylinders and building material in difficult terrains. The sturdy power suspension and hydraulic shock absorbers give it the freedom to carry fragile goods without any worry of damage.
