The positive momentum continues in the overall CV wholesales in the month of July’22.
On the first day of August, the top truck brands posted their monthly wholesale numbers (vehicle shipped to their dealers) of overall commercial vehicle sales for July’2022. All the players, market leaders Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Eicher Trucks, and Mahindra & Mahindra maintained their growing sales in the month as demand for trucks stays robust. The July'22 number points towards greater demand for new trucks as sustained economic activities are supporting higher logistics and cargo shipping across the country.
The overall demand for trucks across last-mile, light, medium and heavy-duty segments remains stronger, however, it appears that there is some moderation in the numbers. Yet, truck makers expect demand for trucks to stay elevated as economic activities are looking rather buoyant as all the key economic indicators appear optimistic.

Let's look at the number of top truck brands in the month.
The market leader Tata Motors' overall domestic commercial vehicle sales rose by 44% to 31,473 units in the month. (July 2021: 21,796 units). The M&HCV truck category grew by 57% to 8,522 units. (July 2021: 5,416 units). The ILCVs jumped by 33% to 4,475 units, the cargo SCVs and pickups are the largest segments with a volume of 15,022 units that grew by 23%. The commercial passenger carrier increased by a massive 19% in the month to 3,454 units. The firm exported a total of 2,681 units in the month registering a growth of 31%.
Ashok Leyland’s domestic sales grew by 56% to 12,715 units. (July 2021: 8,129 units). The M&HCVs sales grew by a whopping 111% to 7,329 units, the trucks were up by 99%, and buses by 370%, selling 6,596 units and 733 units, respectively. The LCVs sale moderated to double-digit growth of 16% to 5,386 units (July 2021: 4,656). The total cumulative domestic sales (April-July) stands at 49,839 units against 24,679 units in the same period last year (+102%).
Mahindra & Mahindra also registered positive sales momentum in the month with a considerable uptick across its key truck segments in July 2022 with a total commercial vehicle sales of 25,291 vehicles. The light commercial vehicle segments of less than 2 tonnes sold 3,693 units (+3%), the 2-3.5-tonne GVW pickup segment continues to be the biggest volume category for the firm with a sale of 16, 445 units (+22%), the above 3.5T, and the heavy commercial vehicles was 808 units up by 89%. The firm sold a total of 4351 units of three-wheeler, up by 103%.
Eicher Trucks registered a jump of 51% in the overall domestic wholesale to 5,360 units in the month. (June 2021: 3,553 units). The domestic sales for the April-July, recorded a total of 20,743 units, up by a massive 175%. The export in the month dropped by 20% to 501 units.
