Eicher BS6 engine family: Full Details

The company recently showcased the new BS6 engine family to power the 4-55T range of EUTECH6 trucks. We take a close look.

The biggest change in the new emission regime is essentially the whole powertrain of trucks, and the engine is at the heart of this technological leap. Indian local OEMs have been working relentlessly to get their BS6 trucks ready with contemporary powertrain; now, the trucks are ready to roll-out after several millions of kms of real-life and lap testing. Unlike its peers in the industry, Eicher Truck has an advantage as the company is already manufacturing BS6 engines for the last few years and shipping them to its partner Volvo Truck globally. Now, the company fully prepared with its local BS6 engine family with a brand new truck for the Indian market.

The company recently unveiled BS6 truck range branded as EUTECH6 and the engines family too. It has got a strong 7 engine portfolio inclusive of 5 diesel and 2 CNG ranging between 2-10 litres with power from 100 to 350HP.

Backed by its intense R&D and rigorous testing, Eicher is confident of the performance of these engines in Indian conditions. The company is promising higher torque ranging between 13-30% for its customers as compare to BS4 engines to enable the highest productivity. Eicher believes, this new-gen engine family is adequate to serve the market in a variety of truck combination today and in the near future. However, as per the need of the customers and changing trends, the company can bring any new engine.

E336 Diesel

The E366 belongs to the small family of engines with the power of 100 HP, this 2 litre, 3-cylinder, 4 strokes direct injection diesel combustion system, deployed at the lowest end of the Eicher range. It comes with a maximum torque range of 285 Nm at 1250-2500 rpm with a peak pressure of 190 bar along with cooled EGR, hot side electric EGR valve system. The exhaust after-treatment system is inline EATS, with zonal coating DOC, ASC, RSiC, DPF, CuZe, 4 Gen SCR.  This engine is targeted at light-duty application trucks for applications like market loads, fruits and vegetables, parcel and courier and FMCG.

E474 Diesel

The E474 belongs to the small family with power ranging from 120-140 HP. It is 3 litre, 4-cylinder direct injection diesel combustion system. This engine finds applications in the MDT range of trucks with maximum torque of 350-400 Nm at 1200-1500 rpm with a peak pressure of 190 bar. It comes with cooled EGR, hot side electric EGR valve system. The exhaust after-treatment system is inline EATS, with zonal coating DOC, ASC, RSiC, DPF, CuZe, 4 Gen SCR.

E494 Diesel

Another vital engine to power the MTD range of Eicher trucks, the E494 comes in the crucial 160-180 HP range of power at 2600 rpm. This 4-cylinder, 3.8 litre 4 stroke diesel direct injection engine maximum torque ranges from 500-600 Nm at 1200-1800 rpm. This engine most likely to find applications in long-distance haulage segments as well as tippers too.

MDE8 Diesel

The MDE8 is a 6-cylinder, 7.7 litre 4 stroke direct injection diesel engine. It produces in the range of 260-360HP of power at 2200 rpm with a maximum torque range of 1000-1350 Nm at 1200-1600 rpm. This common-rail injection engine is AVU controlled WG turbocharger and intercooler with hot EGR system. The exhaust after-treatment system comes with box muffler, DOC, DPF, Extruded vanadium SCR and ASC. These powerful engines will go to the heavy-duty range in the application such as long-haul distribution and tippers too.

MDE5 Diesel

The smaller sibling of MDE8, the MDE5 is a 4-cylinder, 5.1 litre 4 stroke direct injection diesel engine. It produces in the range of 210-240 HP of power at 2200 rpm with a maximum torque range of 825-900 Nm at 1200-1600 rpm. This common-rail injection engine is AVU controlled WG turbocharger air aspiration system. The exhaust after-treatment system comes with box muffler, DOC, DPF, Extruded vanadium SCR and ASC.

E483 CNG

This 3.3 litre, 4-cylinder CNG engine has two variants E483 CNG NA (95HP and 245Nm of torque) and E483 CNG TCIC (115 HP and 360Nm of torque). This engine is suitable for short-distance city and intercity applications, including Fruits and vegetables, parcel and courier, market load and FMCG, etc. Markets like NCR where CNG is compulsory and some of the states and cities with CNG availability and Eicher looks to introduce products with this engine in these select markets.

E494 BS6 CNG

Another CNG engine, the E494 is a 4-cylinder, 3.8 litre engine with 4 stroke CNG with spark ignition. The produces 135HP of power with maximum torque of 450 Nm at 1400-1800 rpm. Slightly higher CNG engine again used for application such as market load, fruits and vegetable, parcel and courier and industrial goods, etc.

The engines will soon get into Eicher popular Pro2000, Pro3000, and Pro 6000 and Pro8000 MDT and HDT range with engine tune to particular applications.
