E-commerce Boom Increases Sales of Commercial Vehicle Makers

Published On Feb 15, 2016By Prashant Talreja

The e-commerce boom in India has contributed immensely for the growth of commercial vehicle sales. Commercial vehicle manufacturers have recognized the hard work done by the e-commerce industry for the recent surge in CV sales and foresee that this growth will continue. Although, the e-commerce platform accounts for only a small part in the domestic transport industry, it has displayed a significant growth potential. The revenue for the commercial vehicle makers through these online platforms is projected around INR 3,400 crores in the coming 3 to 4 years span.

Speaking on this growth, Ravi Pisharody, CV Executive Director, Tata Motors, said, "We have already sold around a 1,000 mini trucks which are being used for last-mile deliveries. Over and above this, we retail 100-200 small commercial vehicles (a month), which are utilized for e-commerce-related goods movement.”

"If consumption continues to increase over and above traditional retail, we expect it will result in higher demand for trucks in the heavy duty segment as well," he added. Tata Motors sells around 13,500 LCV units a month.

Vinod Dasari, MD, Ashok Leyland, said, "It (e-commerce) is definitely helping. Instead of somebody going to the store and purchasing, consumers are now ordering online. These products are shipped from some central warehouses and transport has to be (through) trucks. It is increasing our business."
