Daimler AG Sets its Eyes on Sub 9-Tonne Trucks Category In India

In a move that might impact the profit charts of various Indian and foreign truck manufacturers, Daimler AG has planned to launch sub 9-tonne trucks next year in India. Christened as ‘Titan’, the trucks will both be sold and exported to other countries from India.
Daimler’s production plant located at Oragadam has a production capacity of 36,000 trucks per year. Moreover, the truck manufacturer has also invested around INR 5,000 crores in the 400 acre facility already. The trucks manufactured at the facility are exported to Africa, South East Asia and Latin America.
“We will start in India with the product called ‘Titan’ next year,” confirmed Marc Llistosella, Head of Daimler Trucks Asia. He further said, “We will start the products below 9-tonne from India to India and also to the world. That’s very important because now it’s the third product.”
As per Daimler, the company has exported 7,000 units from India and has sold around 42,000 trucks within India. The company sells its products in India under the name BharatBenz. Its presence in India is through a 100 percent subsidiary - Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) which has already manufactured 52,000 - 53,000 commercial vehicles in its four years of operation in the country.
Llistosella stressed on DICV as one of the biggest solar power producing entities in India and said, “Roughly 35 percent of our energy supply is from solar panels and in two years from now, we will be self sufficient in energy which is really remarkable.”
Daimler had reached a remarkable achievement of exporting 5,000 units in June this year. Mitsubishi Fuso Truck, Bus Corporation and DICV operate under Daimler Trucks Asia (DTA). The company currently sells trucks between nine and 49 tonne categories in India.
