Ashok Leyland Sets Sight On January 2019 To Launch Electric Vehicles

Published On Nov 20, 2018By Abhishek Katariya

A senior official from Ashok Leyland has reportedly revealed the company’s plans of unveiling its first set of electric vehicles by January 2019. No official information has been revealed by the company as of now.

However, Mr. Vinod K Dasari, Managing Director of Ashok Leyland, has said that the company has already completed work on its electric vehicle production facility in Chennai. He is thus expecting the first batch of Ashok Leyland electric vehicles to roll out from the assembly line by January 2019. Additionally, the manufacturer will be supplying its electric vehicles for the Vibrant Gujarat global summit that is scheduled in January next year. This will provide an operational look at how the EVs perform in practical conditions.

Owned by the Hinduja Group, Ashok Leyland is one of the biggest players in the Indian commercial vehicle segment. The company recently announced its financial results for the quarter and half year ending September 2018, and posted record performance in sales, EBITDA and net profit. The manufacturer has invested heavily in the development of its new-generation range of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) as well, which are expected to be launched by 2020.

The firm is also planning to open a new production facility in Andhra Pradesh. The Managing Director even mentioned that this new plant is almost complete and is thus waiting for the government to lay new roads before going operational. Once live, this manufacturing facility will be able to produce any type of bus, including electric vehicles.
