Published On Mar 30, 2016By Prashant Talreja

In a statement issued recently, Ashok Leyland has revealed that it has recorded orders worth nearly Rs.800 crore from the country's armed forces. The company is rising to become one of the largest clients of the Indian army, along with segment rivals such as Tata, which had also recently grabbed a record-breaking order.

Ashok Leyland has received an order for 450 units of Field Artillery Tractor 6x6, other similar Super Stallion vehicles and 825 units of Ambulance 4x4s from the Army. Currently, nearly 70,000 Stallion trucks from the Chennai-based manufacturer are employed in the field of the armed forces.

Reports claim that the nation's armed forces are aiming to enhance their operations and push them to a new sphere of modernization and efficiency. The entity has regularly employed private sector majors such as Ashok Leyland and Tata on major orders for equipment. The defense ministry recently brought out a new Defense Procurement Policy (DPP), which underlines a set of steps to promote change within the body.

“The orders for Field Artillery Tractor 6x6 and Ambulance 4x4 are in keeping with the momentum witnessed recently in the area of upgradation of technology and resources by the defense forces. It also reaffirms our credentials as the largest defense mobility manufacturer that meets stringent requirements of the armed forces,” said Vinod K. Dasari, managing director for Ashok Leyland.
